Tamaulipas Crows have returned to the Rio GRande Valley after an almost 20 year absence. Most sightings have been from the "traditional" site at the Brownsville Dump, but one or two birds have been seen sporadically near the Convention Center on South Padre Island. I was lucky enough to catch up with one this afternoon.

  • Tamaulipas Crow
  • Monarch Butterflies

November 12th - Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival Photography Trip to Martin Ranch Refuge, La Joya, TX

I had the opportunity to visit the Martin Ranch Refuge as the driver for the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival Photography Trip. The focus of the trip is to photograph various raptors (especially Crested Caracaras and Harris's Hawks) close up as they are feeding on meat scraps put out by the refuge. There are blinds provided at several locations throughout the property.

The birds cooperated and many, many photos were taken by the four participants and myself. In addition to the birds, there were several Javelinas and hundreds of butterflies.

  • Crested Caracara
  • Harris's Hawk
  • Green Jay
  • Javelina
  • Large Orange Sulphur
  • Lyside Sulphur
  • Southern Dogface
  • Dung Beetle
