Great Kiskadee
[Pitangus sulphuratus]
[Length 9.75 in. Wingspan 15 in.]
The Great Kiskadee is a tropical flycatcher which occurs in the US only in the Rio Grande valley of southern Texas and rarely in southeastern Arizona.
It is often found near water, where it hunts from a low perch, often at eye level.
Common throughout its limited range in the US, its combination of black and white striped head, rusty wings and tail, and bright yellow underparts will immediately identify it.
This one was photographed along the dike at Santa Ana NWR near McAllen, Texas.
Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ED lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
