American Goldfinch
[Spinus tristis]
[Length 5 in. Wingspan 9 in.]
American Goldfinches are common breeders and feeder visitors throughout much of the US and southern Canada.
The males are stunning in their bright yellow-gold and black plumage.
The call of the American Goldfinch, usually given in flight, is a repetitive "POTATO-CHIP" or "PER-CHICK-A-REE".
It is easy to learn and allows the bird to be identified long before it is seen.
This male American Goldfinch was photographed at the Moose Visitor Center, Gould (Walden), Colorado, USA.
Photo taken with a AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens on a Nikon D7100 camera.
