White Ibis
[Eudocimus albus]

[Length 25 in. Wingspan 38 in.]

The White Ibis is a stunning bird with a pure white body and bright, pink-red face, bill, and legs. The long, downcurved bill gives the bird a comical appearance. In flight, the wingtips are black. White Ibises normally occur in coastal marshes and Mangrove swamps from the Carolinas to Florida and all along the Gulf coast. They nest in large colonies which can often contain thousands of birds in trees near the water. Individuals and small groups often disperse after the breeding season in late summer and can turn up unexpectedly throughout the eastern US. This one was photographed along a river on the central Texas coast near Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: January 1989)
