Savannah Sparrows breed in grasslands throughout Alaska, Canada, and much of the US except for the southeastern and southcentral states. They are a small sparrow with a short tail, streaked upperparts, a streaked breast, and yellowish lores (area at base of bill) and eyestripe. They are distinguished from the similar Song Sparrow by their smaller size, lighter overall coloration, and shorter tail. This one was photographed in the foothills near Anchorage, Alaska. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 200 film.. (Date: May 1989)
