Black-bellied Plovers breed in the high Arctic and winter along both US coasts. Their plaintive "pee-ur-eee" calls are a common, but often unnoticed, sound as they fly along the outer beaches during migration. This one was photographed running along the edge of a wave at Cape May, New Jersey, USA. Photo taken with a Soligor 300 mm f5.6 lens on Ektachrome 200 film. (Date: September 1975)
