Carolina Wren - Northern
[Thryothorus ludovicianus ludovicianus]

[Length 5.5 in. Wingspan 7.5 in.]

Carolina Wrens are residents of all but the far northern states of the eastern US. Most of the birds in the US are the "Northern" type. In the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas, the "Mexican" Carolina Wren replaces the "Northern" Carolina Wren. The "Mexican" Carolina Wren shows variable black-and-white spotting at the shoulder and variable barring on the flanks, which the "Northern" Carolina Wren lacks. The bird shown is a "Northern" Carolina Wren (note the clean buffy shoulder and lack of barring on the flanks). This "Northern" Carolina Wren was photographed in the Texas Hill Country, USA. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm EDAF f4.0 lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: July 1999)
