Whimbrel - North American
[Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus]

[Length 17.5 in. Wingspan 32 in.]

Whimbrels occur in North America, northern Europe, and locally through northern Siberia. The Eurasian race was once considered a separate species form the North American race. In North America they breed on the Arctic Tundra across northern Alaska, far northwestern Canada, and along the western shores of Hudson's Bay in Canada. They winter along both coasts of the US, from Virginia to Texas in the east, and all along the California coast in the west. This "North American" Whimbrel was photographed on the beach during fall migration at Chincoteague NWR in Virginia. Photo taken with a 300mm f5.6 Soligor lens on Ektachrome 200 film. (Date: September 1976)
